Wayne Warren loses to Mark McGeeney 5-4 after winning final set decider 4-2

The fourth men’s quarter final also went to a deciding ninth set – and No 2 seed Mark McGeeney came through it in a tie break. “I don’t know how I won that,” said McGeeney. Warren did lead 3-1 and should have had a dart at double top in the eighth set.

But he couldn’t find single 20 and McGeeney made the most of the reprieve. McGeeney had won the opening set and for the next three sets, Warren didn’t miss much as he went 3-1 ahead. McGeeney pegged back the fifth against the darts and threw beautifully in the crucial sixth set to level. Warren held for 4-3 and when he fashioned a match-winning chance in the eighth set, his aim faltered and McGeeney came through. He got the all-important break of throw in the fifth leg of the decider and then held for the match.
